On Thursday 24th October, staff of the Institute of Early Childhood Development (IECD) / UNESCO Category 2 Institute convened to celebrate United Nations Day, a significant occasion marking the day the UN Charter came into force in 1945. The celebration was organized by the International Cooperation and Exchange section, under the leadership of Director Mrs. Beryl Nagapin, in collaboration with the Advocacy, Information, and Capacity Building section.
The event was graced by the presence of the Institute’s Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Shirley Choppy, who commended the initiative to commemorate this important day. She highlighted the significance of the celebration, not only for the UN but also as it coincides with IECD’s own milestone of marking its first anniversary as a Category 2 Institute.
During the event, each staff member received an informative brochure about UN Day, along with a commemorative bookmark. A quiz competition was held to engage staff further, resulting in enthusiastic participation. The winners, Ms. Jacqueline Hoareau from the Support Staff section and Mrs. Ina Barbe from the Technical Staff section, were recognized for their knowledge and presented with prizes.
To further enhance the occasion, Dr. Mmantsetsa Marope, Chairperson of the IECD UNESCO Governing Board, sent a strong message calling upon governments and stakeholders to support the Institute in fully harnessing the transformative potential of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE). Dr. Marope stated, “By backing ECCE financially, we can create a model that empowers our youngest generation and establishes a robust foundation for lifelong learning.”
The celebration underscored the vital role that both the United Nations and early childhood education play in fostering global cooperation and nurturing future generations. It was a day of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment to advancing the Institute’s mission and objectives.
